Astbury Lake record falls as  "The Sergeant" reach's 44LBS !!

Its been another fantastic season on Astbury Mere this season. Members have been reporting some spectacular captures with the annual carp match not failing to disappoint. When we think it couldn't get better, it has as a new lake record has been set in the form of "The Sergeant" being slipped over the net at a dizzy weight of 44lbs 4ozs. Below is a brief account of how the event unfolded by captor Greg Jonhston 

 

 

With limited time to fish this year, I had to pick my sessions wisely. I had booked the Friday off work, giving myself the best chance to get where I wanted to be. Good prep at home allowed me to go straight from work on the Thursday. Lapping the lake in the dark multiple times, with loads of choice. I knew I had to be in the inform peg, middle marsh. Unfortunately, this area was taken, but only until the next morning. I camped in the peg next door not wanting to hinder Micky's angling. Come midday the next day I couldn't help myself with showing fish but fling the rods out and within 30 mins, I had a low 30 common. 

Game on.

Although I'd caught in LH Marsh, I still jumped in middle as soon as I got the chance. A small stockie and mid 20 mirror came next. Full of confidence I text the misses saying I had a feeling 'Sergeant' was due to be caught. Midday on the Saturday I had a one toner, picked the rod up and straight away thought I'd hooked one of the big cats, taking line at 100+ yards.

 

After quite a lengthy battle in the marshes shallow water, Big Ry slipped the next under what looked one of the A team. As soon as I saw it, Sergeant, and it looked absolutely massive. 

A few lads popped round, we took the pics after taking the weight, 44lbs 4oz!!!. I just couldn't believe the size of it. I rang my dad straight away. Knowing he was the last captor of Sergeant in the annual Astbury match in July,  I was curious at what weight he'd caught it, to my surprise 38lb only 10 weeks prior. Sergeant has clearly been another one of Astbury's A team on the munch.
